Honda's Struggles and Updates: A Detailed Look at the 2024 Package

"Honda's MotoGP team faces challenges with their 2024 package but remains hopeful for future improvements through ongoing upgrades and rider feedback."

Honda has been diligently working behind the scenes in private tests to enhance its troubled 2024 package. Despite these efforts, the riders did not experience the anticipated improvements at the Barcelona Grand Prix last weekend. Johann Zarco raced with a new aerodynamic package, and an updated engine was used by Joan Mir and Luca Marini. However, these changes did little to improve Honda's performance, with LCR’s Takaaki Nakagami emerging as the lead HRC rider in 14th place, followed by Mir, Zarco, and Marini—all of whom finished over 30 seconds behind the race winner.

The low-grip nature of the Barcelona track exacerbated Honda’s traction issues. Mir noted that the updated engine configuration worsened this problem. Despite this, he believes that persevering with the new direction is crucial as the potential for improvement is higher compared to the previous setup.

Mir's Challenging Weekend

Reflecting on his experience, Mir described his Catalan GP as a "nightmare." He expressed significant discomfort throughout the weekend, stating, "I had very bad feelings all weekend. As I said, I expected a struggle on this track. We are using a different engine configuration, and I don’t feel good with it. The spin level is probably worse than the other one, and then the top speed is much less."

Mir elaborated on the impact of the new engine configuration, explaining that in previous races, he could stay closer to the lead group and even compete within the top 10. However, in Barcelona, he had no chance of achieving that. "Here I didn’t have any option to do it. So, we probably took a step back to make two forward in the future. But at the moment it’s tough and the situation is like this – it’s even worse," he added.

Despite the immediate challenges, Mir emphasized the long-term potential of the updated engine. "The margin [of the updated engine] is higher. And in the short-term, it’s probably better to receive some upgrades. So, it’s the right choice," he concluded.

Marini's Perspective

Luca Marini shared Mir’s sentiment about the updated engine but also noted an improvement in his riding experience. "With the new upgrade, the spin is more," Marini said. "It’s one of our problems, but [on] this track the spin is a problem for everybody – I think also for Pecco [Bagnaia]!"

Marini acknowledged the need to focus and be strategic about the areas that require improvement. "In my opinion, we are doing a great job, we just need to wait for more upgrades and find more performance because at least now the bike is [at a point] where I can enjoy. I feel not in an incredible way but for sure much better than in the first races of the season. So, now I can ride, I can defend myself and I can attack, so this is great."

However, Marini admitted that there is still a significant performance gap. "But still, we miss performance. So, we are waiting for this. Maybe in Mugello we can have something more," he added.

The Path Forward

As Honda continues to develop its 2024 package, the focus remains on addressing the traction issues and enhancing overall performance. The feedback from riders like Mir and Marini is crucial in guiding these improvements. The upcoming races, including Mugello, will be critical in testing new updates and determining the effectiveness of the changes.

Honda's commitment to improvement is evident in its ongoing private tests and the incremental upgrades introduced during race weekends. The challenges faced at Barcelona highlight the complexity of achieving competitive performance in MotoGP, but they also underscore the potential gains that can be made with persistent development.

In conclusion, while the immediate results at Barcelona were disappointing, the long-term outlook for Honda’s 2024 package remains cautiously optimistic. With continued focus and strategic upgrades, the team aims to overcome its current challenges and compete more effectively in the forthcoming races.
